Women In Love
main characters
Sisters Ursula and Gudrun, their boyfriends Gerald, Birkin
Rip's impressions
Heady, philosophical, and erotic for its time. The private wrestling match between Gerald and Birkin in the state room of a giant mansion is one of the most memorable scenes from the novel. How else could men show their love for each other back then? A great movie production from the 70s captured the moment very well.
first line
Ursula and Gudrun Brangwen sat one morning in the window-bay of their father's house in Beldover, working and talking.
last lines
(spoiler alert)
"You can't have two kinds of love. Why should you!"
"It seems as if I can't," he said. "Yet I wanted it."
"You can't have it, because it's false, impossible," she said.
"I don't believe that," he answered.
